Welcome Letter from the Chief

Welcome to the Fairbanks Fire Department web page.  It is my pleasure to represent all the outstanding members that make up the Fairbanks Fire Department.  Our members proudly service the citizens and visitors to the City of Fairbanks area, they are all part of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1324.  I invite you to also check out the other parts of the City of Fairbanks web page to learn more about what makes Fairbanks such a great, safe, and vibrant community.

Fairbanks Fire Department (FFD) is a multi-hazard career fire department that has seen call volume increase every year for several years now.  FFD covers 32 square miles and has about 32,000 permanent residents.  Our population can surge with tourists and area residents to well over 70,000 at any given time.  Our 2023 projection says that FFD will respond to over 7400 calls for service.  Our department is broken down into different divisions, suppression, prevention, training, and administrative.  Each day we staff one Battalion Chief, two engines, two ambulances, one squad that cross-staffed the platform, and a third ambulance.  In total, we have a minimum of 13 personnel on shift each day.  We have three current shifts A, B, and C, and in total starting 1/1/24, we will have 50 positions between suppression and administrative in FFD.

We are always eager to answer our citizens’ questions and seek opportunities to hear your ideas and suggestions on how we can improve our services to you.  Please take the time to look over our web page and send us a message at fire@fairbanks.us if you have any questions or suggestions for our fire department.  You are also welcome to call us at our main number 907-450-6600.

It is my honor to lead this dedicated membership that respond to emergencies in some of the most extreme weather conditions in the world.  Once again welcome to our web page and thank you for spending time learning about FFD.

Thank you,

Andrew Coccaro, Fire Chief
