Associated Boards and Commissions
The following Boards and Commissions are appointed by the Fairbanks City Council
for the establishment, review and oversight of the codes and policies
used by the City of Fairbanks Building Department:
Board of Plumber Examiners
The Board of Plumber Examiners is empowered to perform the duties as prescribed in Sections 2-306 through 2-309, as well as Sections 14-291 through 14-301 of the Fairbanks General Code (FGC).
Building Code and Landscape Review and Appeals Commission
The purpose of the Building Code Review and Appeals Commission is:
- To review the building, electrical, plumbing, fire prevention, residential, mechanical, fuel gas and abatement codes and related provisions of the Fairbanks Code of Ordinances and make recommendations regarding building construction and housing codes adopted by the City,
- To investigate and review all operations of the building department of the City, to submit recommendations on policy to the City Council, and to make recommendations on administration to the mayor, and
- To hear and determine in the first instance all appeals from final staff decisions relating to building construction within the City including the Uniform Code for the Abatement of Dangerous Buildings. Any decision of the board may be appealed to the superior court in accordance with the appellate rules of the state court system, and
- To review any disputes arising from the Building Official's application of the prescriptive design method, an applicant's election to use the professional design method, or an applicant's election to use the alternative compliance method.
The City Council performed a review of all City Boards and Commissions in the last quarter of the year and recommended consolidation of the functions of the Landscape Review and Appeals Commission with the Building Code Review and Appeals Commission.
On December 9, 2019, the Fairbanks City Council adopted Ordinance No. 6120 to combine the two Commissions. The Landscape Review & Appeals Commission has been repealed from the Fairbanks General Code, and its purpose and duties have been consolidated with the newly-named Building Code and Landscape Review and Appeals Commission.
