FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Cases 21-3655 – DV Assault & Misconduct Involving Weapons

DATE: September 28, 2021

MEDIA CONTACT: Teal Soden, Communications Director, 907-459-6793, tsoden@fairbanks.us

On Monday, September 27, at approximately 12:28 a.m., Fairbanks Emergency Communication Center dispatched Fairbanks Police officers to an apartment complex on University Avenue after receiving a report from a caller who witnessed a male strangle his girlfriend and fight with his girlfriend over a gun. The witness reported that the male had left the residence with the gun.

Officers responded to the area and located the suspect, HUNTER CHANCEY (D.O.B. 08/06/96), in the parking lot of Sophie’s Plaza. CHANCEY still had the gun in his hand, and when contacted by FPD officers he told the officers to shoot him. Officers began negotiating with CHANCEY and after approximately 13 minutes the suspect dropped his gun. When officers approached the suspect, he would not comply with commands. One officer used his taser on the suspect and officers were then able to arrest the suspect without further incident.

The suspect’s firearm turned out to be a fully loaded Baretta .40 caliber handgun.

Investigation revealed that CHANCEY had been in an argument with his girlfriend, and during the course of the argument, she took his handgun and locked herself in the bathroom so that he would not have access to it. CHANCEY admitted to officers that he broke the door down to the bathroom to get his gun back, and in the course of struggling for the gun he put his girlfriend in a rear naked chokehold. The victim told police that she ended up losing consciousness when CHANCEY was cutting off her oxygen. The suspect was under the influence of alcohol during this incident.

CHANCEY was placed under arrest for Assault in the First Degree (DV), Assault in the Third Degree (DV), and Misconduct Involving Weapons in the Fourth Degree and transported to Fairbanks Correctional Center.
