Welcome to Chief Styers, new City of Fairbanks Fire Chief!

Welcome, Chief. Jim Styers became our Fire Chief on December 1, 2015.

Jim Styers was born in to a large military family in Cutbank, Montana, and moved with his family to Eielson Air Force Base in 1976.  Jim graduated from Ben Eielson High School in 1983 and later attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks.  While earning an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science at UAF he worked as a student fire fighter.

After graduating from UAF, Jim moved to Kansas City, KS where he worked at the Kansas Fire Department for 7 years. He returned to Alaska after being hired as a Captain at the University Fire Department in 1991.   While at UFD, Jim attained his paramedic license from Tidewater Community College in Virginia.  In 2012, he graduated from UAS with a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources.  Jim continued his education at UAS and completed his Master’s Degree in Public Administration in 2014.
