20 years ago this month, David “Barry” McNulty was shot and killed at the Garden Island Party Store. All leads received during and after the investigation have been followed-up, however the case remains unsolved. Information regarding this case is requested from the public. The details are as follows:
On May 30th, 1994 at 11:07 p.m., the Fairbanks Police Department responded to a “panic alarm” at the Garden Island Party Store located at 246 Illinois Street. The responding Officer was in the immediate vicinity and arrived within a minute of being dispatched. Upon arrival, the Officer entered the building and found the clerk, David “Barry” McNulty, deceased from a gunshot wound. Based on the crime scene, it appeared that a robbery had taken place.
Mr. McNulty had been contacted by a family member at the store about 10:50 p.m. The family member was scheduled to return to pick up Barry when the store closed at 11:00 p.m. When the family member returned there were several police cars in the parking lot in response to the alarm and homicide.
Barry McNulty, the victim, was married and a father of 5 children. At the time of his death his children ranged from 14-22 years old. One of his daughters graduated from high school three days before he was killed. In the 20 years since, there have been multiple graduations, three weddings, the birth of four grandkids and numerous other events that he and his family could not share.
At the request of the family, the Fairbanks Police Department is asking for assistance from the public and requests that anyone with any information contact Detective Scott Adams at 450-6552.
