Tonight, residents will see Fairbanks Police Officers out with members of the community for the “Shop with a Cop” event. Shop with a Cop is a national program that provides children an opportunity to shop for Christmas gifts for their family and themselves. This program was developed to help make the season special for children and their families and give an opportunity for children to develop positive relationships with the law enforcement community.
Children are paired up with a Fairbanks Police Officer and get to go out Christmas shopping. Officers help the children shop for presents and the items are paid for with gift cards donated by sponsors. After the shopping is done the children return to the school to wrap presents (assisted by volunteers), and eat pizza and snacks. Children are nominated for the program by local elementary school counselors.
Sponsors have generously donated funds that allow each child a $100 gift card to spend at Fred Meyer. Sponsors and volunteers include the Langston Family Foundation, Fred Meyer, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the Counseling Department at Lathrop High School, Odom Corporation, Mt McKinley Animal Hospital, North Pole Coffee Roasting and the Fairbanks Police Department. Many community volunteers also help with the event.
This is the fourth year for the Shop with a Cop event in Fairbanks.
