3/9/22 - Snow Removal Reminder

snow plowing

This winter has been one for the records!  Unfortunately, we have received several complaints this year from residents stating that their neighbors are pushing snow into the road. As a friendly reminder, Fairbanks City Code prohibits the removal of snow from private property and placing it on sidewalks and streets.  This also includes placing snow from private property in right of ways if it interferes with snow removal operations, garbage collection, drainage systems, mail delivery, newspaper delivery, line of sight at intersections, or the rights of other property owners.

The City is able to utilize the right of ways for public purposes; however, this right does not extend to adjacent private property owners to move or store snow in the right of way that borders property that they do not own.

The City has limited snow storage space for hauling snow removed from streets and sidewalks. Adding snow from private property to our berms on streets slows down the snow removal process in neighborhoods, and hidden objects in snow pushed from private property can cause thousands of dollars in damages our blowers. Doesn’t look like we’re quite done getting snow yet, so thank you to everyone that is following City code regarding snow removal and thank you also for your patience while our hard-working Public Works crew deals with the record snow fall we’ve gotten this year!
