Battalion Chief Greg Coon of the University Fire Department was honored at City Hall during Council Meeting on Monday night with a proclamation noting his extraordinary heroism. The proclamations were signed by City Mayor John Eberhart, Fairbanks North Star Borough Mayor Luke Hopkins, and North Pole Mayor Bryce Ward.
WHEREAS, at or about 3:50 am on January 29th, 2014 University Fire Department Battalion Chief Greg Coon rescued a family of three small children and two adults from the second story of a burning apartment building; and
WHEREAS, Battalion Chief Coon, by displaying decisive initiative and action is credited with saving the lives of the five family members by using a portable extension ladder to effect rescue through heavy fire conditions, smoke, water and snow; and
WHEREAS, Battalion Chief Coon placed his own safety in jeopardy by taking immediate action in a dangerous situation:
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Luke Hopkins, Mayor of the Fairbanks North Star Borough, and I, John Eberhart, Mayor of the City of Fairbanks, and I, Bryce Ward, Mayor of the City of North Pole, recognize Battalion Chief Greg Coon for his heroic act in service to the citizens of Fairbanks.
