With the exciting news that we are receiving two squadrons of F-35s in 2020, approximately $500 million in military construction before then and potentially 3,400 additional service men and women, it was cause for celebration. The City, the Fairbanks North Star Borough, and the Fairbanks Economic Development Corporation partnered with Pioneer Park to organize the event. It was held on August 20, 2016. The Governor and our three mayors proclaimed August 20 as Military Appreciation and F-35 Day. There was an impressive list of dignitaries supporting the event. Governor Bill Walker, Senator Lisa Murkowski, Senator Dan Sullivan, Congressman Don Young, General Laurie Hummel (Alaska National Guard), Col David Mineau (Eielson Commander), Col Sean Williams (Ft. Wainwright Garrison Commander), State Senator John Coghill, Bob Delaney (Lockheed Martin), Mayor Karl Kassel, Mayor John Eberhart, Mayor Bryce Ward and Luke Hopkins (Former Mayor FNSB). It was a great event with so much for the community: the wooden F-35 built by Mayor Ward, a scavenger hunt, hot dogs, cake, prizes and giveaways. It was a fantastic way to say thank you to the military, thank you to the community and unite all the positive excitement for what is to come.
