Letter from Mayor Pruhs - Kathy Ottersten

councilperson

It is with a heavy heart that I address the Fairbanks community today to share the sad news of the unexpected passing of our former City Council member, Kathy Ottersten, who served our city with distinction and dedication after their election in October 2018. I was personally able to serve side-by-side as a council person with them during their one-year term as we worked though many different community issues. Kathy also served on the City of Fairbanks Diversity Council prior to being elected to the City Council.

Kathy’s commitment to public service and to all of the City of Fairbanks departments was evident in every decision they made and every action they took on behalf of our community. Their passion for making our city a better place for everyone was unwavering, and their legacy will continue to inspire so many.

During this time of mourning, let us come together to honor Kathy’s memory and continue their work in building a brighter future for our city. My deepest condolences go out to their family, friends, and all who were touched by their remarkable spirit and unwavering dedication to our community.

We will forever be grateful for Kathy’s service and deeply miss their presence among us. Let us keep their spirit alive through our ongoing commitment to the community they loved so dearly.

-Mayor David Pruhs
