In March 2006, with the assistance of grant funding from the Alaska Highway Safety Office (AHSO) and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Department implemented a DUI/Traffic Enforcement unit. Today, the unit comprises a supervising Sergeant and four full time traffic officers.
This unit is solely dedicated to working traffic enforcement and DUI patrols in an effort to create safer streets and reduce accidents and drunk driving in the Fairbanks community.
Officers on the DUI/Traffic Enforcement unit are selected from patrol division and serve on a two year assignment that may be voluntarily extended based on performance. They are issued specially marked patrol vehicles and equipment to better perform the traffic mission.
