Why Fairbanks Fire Department?

Why FFD?

The Fairbanks Fire Department has many things to offer a firefighter or paramedic just beginning their career.  The interior of Alaska has lots to offer active individuals, with many year round activities.  If the climate and location interest you, than the FFD would be a great place to work.  The Fairbanks Fire Department is the only public full time career fire department in the Fairbanks area.  The current work schedule, 48-96, provides for ample opportunities for our employees to be active and get out to enjoy the varied activities available in the area.  Fairbanks is the northern hub of Alaska offering a wide variety of both city type events and endless outdoor recreational activities.  Events and activities vary season to season; Fairbanks boasts  a mild summer and an arctic winter providing many opportunities.  The Chena River runs through town, mountains are visible in the distance, Northern Lights light up the skies  during the winter, all making Fairbanks a picturesque place to raise a family.

The Fairbanks Fire Department is the busiest department within the Fairbanks North-Star Borough with an annual call volume of around 5,000 runs.   This makes FFD an organization where members are exposed to a wide variety of emergencies very quickly.  The fast pace allows Firefighters/EMT’s and Firefighter/Paramedics to gain a wide range of knowledge and hands on experience very quickly.   Call types vary from ALS and BLS transport EMS,  structure fires, brush fires, vehicle fires,  motor vehicle collisions, water rescues and other types of technical rescue. Fairbanks Fire provides the only Paramedic level EMS service in the Fairbanks North Star Borough and our physician sponsor has very progressive medical standing orders we operate under.   The FFD also provides and receives mutual aid with many of the surrounding departments offering the opportunity to interact with other organizations.  With the current call volume and lean staffing levels, all members get to be directly involved in providing service on the wide range of calls we encounter on any given shift.

The FFD is a progressive department striving to meet our mission and serve our residents to the best of our ability.  Our personnel are knowledgeable dedicated professionals and are the real backbone of our organization.   Our staff often find creative solutions to the many challenges we face from working in Fairbanks, Alaska.  We have a modern fleet of apparatus and an excellent assortment of tools and equipment to aid us in accomplishing our mission.  We are an organization where every member is encouraged to take on additional roles and work to improve the organization.  If you seek to work at a busy department where you can play an important role from a very early point in your career, then FFD may be a good fit for you.
