Fairbanks Hosts Alaska Fire Conference

The Fairbanks Fire Department has been assisting with the planning and coordination of a major annual training conference for firefighters and fire chiefs from around Alaska with other local area fire departments.
The Alaska Fire Conference is an annual conference, hosted in a different location each year, which provides classes on fire suppression tactics, victim search and rescue, personnel safety, vehicle extrication, fire administration, and awareness on firefighter physical and mental health concerns. The conference is intended to help firefighters stay up-to-date on current trends and issues affecting the fire service. This year’s theme is “Leading The Way”, intended to signify preparing today’s firefighters for the leadership necessary for the future.
The Conference will bring between 200 to 300 firefighters, in addition to their families and related trades people, to Fairbanks. Firefighters will attend classes and seminars throughout Fairbanks at various fire department training grounds.
Hands on training classes begin during pre-conference on Monday September 19th. The Alaska Fire Conference officially begins on Wednesday at the Westmark and closes events on Saturday September 24th with a banquet. A special event at the banquet will honor several firefighters and organizations from around Alaska for major achievements and accomplishments from the past year in categories of Firefighter of the Year, Fire and Life Safety Educator of the Year, Fire Service Instructor of the Year, and the Fire Service Leadership Award.
On Saturday, September 24th at approximately 12:00 PM, the public is invited to attend the annual Firefighter Competition at University Fire Department’s Station 2 located at 1950 University Avenue. In teams firefighters will compete against each other in tests of various skills to include bunker drills, hose deployment, ladder use, etc. Winners take home an impressive trophy laden with bragging rights.
