2021 Storm Drain Art

The Storm Drain Art Contest was a huge success this year and artists completed their projects this past Saturday on Lacey Street!

The purpose of this project is to raise awareness that storm drains in Fairbanks flow directly into the Chena River and we need to protect the habitat and wildlife by not polluting the water.

Established in 2014, the Storm Drain Art Contest seeks proposals for street art based on the themes Storm Water Pollution and wildlife. The chosen artists—who vary widely in age and experience—are commissioned to create their scenes using Fairbanks’ street grates, sidewalks and roadways as their canvas. Additional partners include the Fairbanks Storm Water Advisory Committee and the Downtown Association of Fairbanks.

One of the contest winners, Michael Doxey (pictured in the featured photo), is a big fan of the teenage mutant ninja turtles, but wanted to stick with an Alaskan theme, so he came up with "Teenage Mutant Ninja Bears". It was one of the many excellent pieces that were chosen to be featured this year!
