City Attorney

The City Attorney performs the following duties:

  • The City Attorney is charged with the performing legal services for the city, including those enumerated in the City charter.
  • The City Attorney is the legal adviser to the City Council and to all departments and offices of the city.
  • The City Attorney has the authority to direct prosecution of a violation of the City code.
  • The City Attorney represents the City in all matters civil, administrative and criminal in which the city is a party or involved before all courts and tribunals.
  • The City Attorney drafts any ordinance or resolution as requested by the Mayor or any Council Member.
  • The City Attorney calls to the attention of the City Council all matters of law affecting the City and renders all opinions in writing, insofar as practical.
  • The City Attorney has a number of particular powers, duties and functions set forth in state law and local ordinances.

Services Offered

  • The City Attorney is charged with the performing legal services for the city, including those enumerated in the City charter.
  • This department handles misdemeanor criminal and traffic prosecutions for the City, all civil litigation involving the City.
  • The City Attorney also serves as the head of the City’s Risk Management Department.
