This morning at approximately 7:29 a.m., Fairbanks Emergency Communications Center received a call of an incapacitated person beside the river, below the Cushman Bridge. Approximately ten minutes later, a second call was received that the person of interest had walked out onto the ice and had fallen into the river.
The Fairbanks Fire Department was on scene within 4 minutes and performed an active rescue for over one hour and 40 minutes. During this time the Fire Department cut multiple holes into the ice and preformed several rescue attempts before calling the rescue unsuccessful.
The victim was identified by the reporting witness as an Alaska Native male, in his early 20’s wearing all dark clothing. If you have any additional information regarding this incident or if you are able to help identify this victim please contact the Fairbanks City Police Department.
