City Clerk Receives Master Municipal Clerk Designation

Janey

As of February 11, 2014 our very own City Clerk, Janey Hovenden, earned the prestigious Master Municipal Clerk (MMC) designation from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC).  This certification is the highest designation awarded to Municipal Clerks and Janey has worked extremely hard to obtain it.  In 2012, Janey was also chosen as Clerk of the Year by the Alaska Association of Municipal Clerks (AAMC) and is currently serving as President of the AAMC.  We are fortunate to have her at the City of Fairbanks!

Employee: Fire Chief Warren Cummings

102113 103City of Fairbanks Fire Chief Warren Cummings has been with Fairbanks Fire Department since 1972 and in charge of the Department since 1993. He is responsible for the 6 million dollar annual budget as well as 44 full time employees. During his tenure, the Fire Department has seen over 14 million dollars in capital improvements including construction of a new fire station. Chief Cummings has served in various officer positions in both the Alaska Fire Chiefs and the Western Fire Chiefs Associations (a 10 state region). He also is very active in the community and serves on the Moose International Supreme Council headquartered in Mooseheart, Illinois. Here, Chief Cummings is seen with his award for Interior Fire Chiefs Association Fire Chief of the Year. He is also a breast cancer survivor.

Code Enforcement for Littering

CITIZEN COMMENT: There is little enforcement of parking violations for the residential area of Fairbanks. Priority is given to the business district. Additionally, there are excessive violations of residential garbage pick-up, e.g., canisters w/o lids that result in rubbish scattered on the street by birds. I understand it is costly to enforce these violations when police are preoccupied with more severe matters: DV, theft, drugs. I would like to suggest a correctable/alternative pay option for the parking violation and waste storage violation. It would be like the seatbelt law that allows the offender to pay via donation to emergency services. If you violate the parking ordinance Sec. 78-391 or others, you could be given a community service option of snow shoveling 5 residential hydrants, picking up garbage left behind by the city works due to residential mis-storage. My suggestion is to help attend to multiple residential needs that the city can’t tend to due to lack of resources.

Upgraded Physical Fitness Facilities

EMPLOYEE REQUEST: Would it be possible for employees who work at City Hall and Public Works to utilize Police or Fire’s physical fitness equipment? The “gym” in the basement of City Hall is dilapidated by comparison, with ancient and broken equipment. If Police and Fire are not willing to grant access to regular employees, would it be possible to move one of the facilities to City Hall?

Please check back soon to see the Mayor’s answer to this request.

Water Fountain Upgrades

EMPLOYEE REQUEST: Please investigate replacing the City’s existing water fountains with ones that include a water bottle refill station. One per floor in every City facility would be nice. http://www.elkaypro.com/commercial/bottle-filling-stations/lzs8wsvrs3k
